When it comes to premium packaging, choosing between rigid boxes and folding cartons is one of the most critical decisions you'll make. Both offer excellent branding opportunities, but they have very different structural, economic, and logistical profiles.

1. What is a Folding Carton?

Folding cartons (often called product boxes or paperboard boxes) are made from a single sheet of paperboard (like SBS or Duplex). They are printed, die-cut, and scored, then folded into shape. They are shipped flat and assembled at the point of fulfillment.

  • Pros: Cost-effective, lower shipping and storage costs, great for high volume.
  • Ideal for: Cosmetics, food, FMCG, retail goods.

2. What is a Rigid Box?

Rigid boxes (set-up boxes) are constructed from thick, stiff chipboard (usually 1-3mm thick) wrapped in a decorative printed paper. They are highly durable, feel premium, and do not collapse or fold.

  • Pros: Luxurious unboxing experience, highly durable, requires no assembly during fulfillment.
  • Ideal for: High-end cosmetics, jewelry, electronics, luxury gifting.

3. Cost and Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

Because rigid boxes require more manual labor and thicker materials, they are typically 3-5 times more expensive per unit than folding cartons. The MOQ for rigid boxes may also be lower (often 500 units) because they aren't fully run through massive automated gluing lines like folding cartons.
