Choosing the right packaging box can make or break your product on the shelf. The wrong choice leads to higher costs, slower production, or packaging that simply doesn't represent your brand. This guide will walk you through every key decision — from material selection to finishing options — so you can brief your packaging supplier with confidence.

1. Define Your Product Requirements First

Before thinking about design, start with function. Ask yourself:

  • How heavy is the product? Heavier items need thicker board (300gsm+).
  • Is it fragile? Consider internal inserts or rigid tray structures.
  • Is it food-grade? Requires food-safe ink and specific board types.
  • How will it be stored / shipped? Boxes that stack need stronger board and score lines.
  • What's your retail environment? Shelf packaging needs higher visual impact than B2B products.

2. Understand the Main Board Materials

The material you choose affects cost, print quality, and strength significantly.

Material Weight Range Best For Cost
SBS (Solid Bleached Sulphate) 200–00gsm Cosmetics, pharma, food, premium retail Medium–High
Duplex Board (Grey Back) 250–00gsm General retail, FMCG, budget packaging Low–Medium
Kraft Paper 80–00gsm Eco-friendly brands, organic products, paper bags Low–Medium
Art Card / Coated 150–50gsm Business cards, brochures, leaflets Low
"For most food and FMCG products, we recommend SBS board at 300–50gsm — it prints beautifully with offset and gives you excellent shelf presence. For budget packaging, duplex board works well with a gloss laminate finish."

3. Choose the Right Print Method

The two main options for custom packaging boxes are offset printing and digital printing:

  • Offset printing — Best for large volumes (1,000+ units). Exceptional colour accuracy. Lower cost per unit. Works on most board types. This is what we specialise in at Szheng Industries, using Heidelberg 5-colour machines.
  • Digital printing — Best for small volumes (<500 units) or personalised/variable-data labels. Higher cost per unit. Useful for prototyping.

If you're ordering commercial quantities of packaging, offset printing is almost always the better economic choice.

4. Finishing Options That Elevate Your Brand

Print is just the start. Finishing is what makes packaging feel premium:

  • Gloss lamination — Shiny, vibrant look. Protects print. Common for food and retail.
  • Matte lamination — Soft, sophisticated feel. Popular for cosmetics and lifestyle brands.
  • Spot UV coating — Applies a glossy varnish to specific areas (e.g., logo or headline).
  • Hot foil stamping — Metallic gold, silver, or coloured foil. Premium feel for beauty and gifting.
  • Embossing / Debossing — Adds texture and dimension. Excellent for brand marks and logos.
  • Die cutting — Custom box shape and window cut-outs. Adds unique shelf appeal.

5. What is MOQ and How Should You Plan for It?

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the smallest order a manufacturer will accept. For offset-printed packaging, typical MOQs are:

  • Simple folding carton boxes: 1,000 — 3,000 units
  • Printed paper bags: 500 — 1,000 units
  • Labels and stickers: 1,000 — 5,000 units

MOQ exists because setup costs (plate making, die making) are fixed regardless of quantity. The larger your order, the lower the cost per unit.

6. How to Brief Your Packaging Supplier

A good brief saves time and prevents costly revisions. Include:

  • Product name and dimensions (L × W × H in mm)
  • Product weight
  • Quantity required
  • Board material preference (or ask for recommendation)
  • Finishing requirements
  • Artwork (AI, PDF, or EPS format preferred)
  • Required delivery date
